A. EVENTS LEADING UP TO AND SURROUNDING THE TREATY OF WAITANGI

i. AN ILLEGAL COMPANY IS FORMED TO TRADE IN LAND
1837. An Association is formed in England to buy land in New Zealand to sell on at a profit. It is rejected by the British Parliament, but resurfaces under the name of the "New Zealand Company", sending several boats of colonists to Cook Strait.
ii. THE ACCUSERS
1839: The British Government is forced into a position of making New Zealand a British Colony, but moreso for protection of the Maori against certain unscrupulous Europeans, who stir up much opposition and accusations.
iii. THE SIGNING OF THE TREATY
30th Jan - 6th Feb 1840 - A Governor is sent to New Zealand, a treaty is translated and presented to Maori for signing, still with continuing opposition from Europeans and the Roman Bishop.
iv. THE TREATY IS TAKEN SOUTH
1840. Signatures are gained from both the North and Middle (South) Island, with opposition from the New Zealand Company's 'self appointed' Colonial Government at Wellington.
v. THE AUCKLAND AREA SELECTED BY THE CROWN FOR GOVERNMENT
1840. Captain Hobson and Henry Williams inspect the Tamaki and Waitemata areas for the Seat of Government - the beginnings of Auckland City.
vi. CORRUPTION SETS IN
1841-With systematic hostility, the supporters of the New Zealand Company attacked the Treaty of Waitangi and any protection it offered the natives to their land. They eventually gained support from the Colonial Office and horrifying instructions were issued to the Governor of New Zealand.
vii. HENRY WILLIAMS' UNDERSTANDING OF THE TREATY
1847. Archdeacon Henry Williams gives his understanding of the Treaty of 1840 as given to the Maori of New Zealand.

Narration of events by William Colenso. The most authentic, unbiased account. Worth reading, and comparing with section iii and vii above. Includes interesting descriptions of characters, etc.

i. TEMORENGA AND WARFARE
C. 1805. Once noticing that great power could be gained over other tribes by the use of muskets, Temorenga wastes no time on trading in goods for firearms, and proceeds to take vengeance for the death of his niece.
ii. HONGI'S EXPEDITION
1820. After the success had by Temorenga in using guns with a war party, Hongi is inspired to travel to England and obtain more. He returns wreaking fearful devastation
iii. CANNIBALISM AND OTHER HORRID EVENTS.
1821. "The natives generally speak of it with horror and disgust, yet they expect that this will be their own fate in the end, as it has been with their forefathers and friends."
